I thought I would try "linking" two contact on my phone only to then realize that I then only have one contact going forward. Is there a way to "un-link" two contacts and recovering the two separate entries? I tried to Delete the Linked Contact which of course did just that. Had to re-enter the lost contact.

We see you were viewing "Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support" which was a great place to start.
If you decide to unlink two contacts, you do not need to delete anything. Tap Contacts > one of the linked contacts > Edit > the red dot to the left of the linked contact (you'll need to scroll to the bottom of the screen to see it) > Unlink > Done.
