Can anyone recommend a good slideshow app for iPad OS that does NOT use the Photo library?

Hi, all -

Despite the topic posted, this isn't actually about Apple's Photos App - If anything it's "How to AVOID using Photos", but that doesn't seem to appear in the list of approved topics, so there you go!

Anyway...

I have a large (think thousands) collection of photos saved in nested file folders on my iPad. The folders are named by subject, or date, or whatever other mnemonic I think works for me at the time. The photos are named with the format "FolderName-SequentialNumber" (Small Digression: Thank heavens for Stratospherix's "FileBrowser Pro" - its bulk renaming function is a wonderfulness and well worth the price!) (And, no - I have no relationship with Stratospherix except as a satisfied customer!)

What I am - ideally - looking for is an app which I can point at my enclosing folder and have it randomly read images from the nested folders to insert into a slideshow.

The Apple Photos app - at least in what I've been able to tell - strips title from any image saved to it and later restored to Files. That is: "RandomPicTitle-123" goes in to Photos and "img_4567" comes out. If I need to find a particular photo, currently I can go to Folder>Subfolder>Pictures and find what I need relatively quickly. Without that information, as far I can tell, I'd have to do a lot of scrolling in the Photo album(s) to find what I'm looking for.

The alternative, of course, is keep two complete sets of photos - one in Files for when I need to find a specific picture or pictures AND another complete set in Photos for the slideshow, and that just seems wasteful and cludgey as ****.

The ideal candidate would:

  • NOT use the Apple Photos library.
  • Be able to randomly search nested folders to find content and insert it into a slideshow
  • Not choke itself to death if presented with large file sets
  • Can read files stored locally on the 'Pad, rather than in the aether - there are progs in the App store that can apparently get slideshow content from LAN- and cloud-storage, but I really just prefer knowing where my files are, knowing who can get at them, and knowing that I can access them whether I'm connected to a network or not
  • Simple transitions and programming - each picture on screen for, say, five seconds total with a one second cross-fade between pictures, slide left/right if I feel like getting fancy, and so on. (Spiralling-in-and-out transitions, elxploding fireworks, and such are right out.)

  • AND - in an ideal world! - a buy-once-and-done package to get the full functionality, rather than the never-to-be-sufficiently-cursed subscription model.

Is anyone aware of something that fits the bill?

...or even MOSTLY fits the bill...? (I'm not an unreasonable man, despite what everyone who knows me says!)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks;

Heh.

I solved my own problem - and the solution was an app that I already had!

(I know... RT^M, right?)

I've been using FileBrowser Pro by Stratopherix to supplement Files, a task at which task it serves brilliantly - managing files across my network (Windows and Mac) and cloud services, bulk renaming of files, all sorts of goodies. And it doesn't collect any user data, if you care about such things. AND the Pro version is buy one and done - No subscriptions required. It's not the cheapest app @ $12.99 but, honestly, just with the time that it's saved me in renaming files alone it's has more than paid for itself.

So, as I said, I've been using FBP for a few months now, and just the other day saw the "Slideshows" button on the main screen. Pointed it at the top folder of my image files, started it up, set it to "Random" and otherwise kept the default settings (3 seconds/slide with a fade transition), and - BOOM! - it saw the contents of all of the nested folders and mixed them randomly into a slide show.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for to run slideshows - as well as being a top-notch file manager!

Hi CutterMike,

In the past I've used Keynote, to produce slideshows on Mac.

Am definately NOT an expert on using the iOS version.

From reading about your requirements, seems the app may possibly fit them.

Best way to get familiar with what Keynote can do,

may be browsing the iPad OS version User Guids online (links below).
