iPhone 12 battery life 88%

Have a 15 month old iPhone 12. The battery is constantly hot when using the phone and charging. Should I ask Apple to replace it since it’s still under AppleCare.

is it difficult for them to agree to change it?

Contact Apple and have them run diagnostics. Apple won't generally replace a battery until it drops below 80% if there is nothing else wrong with it. However, there can be other things wrong with the battery than just age. While it's normal for the phone to get warm while charging, if it's getting too hot to hold, that's a bad sign.
