Sometimes iCloud overwrites edits I made to a Contact

This happened to me again today, so I'd like to know what I can do to keep this from happening again.

This morning, I edited a Contact on my iPad. I added about 10 lines of text into the Contact note. When I came back to my iPad a few hours later, I found that all the text I entered had disappeared, and the Contact was back to the state it was at when I first started editing it this morning.

I assume that iCloud overwrote what I had entered on my iPad. WHY??? And what can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again? E.g., is there a way i can force a sync upwards from my iPad to iCloud? My iPad is wifi only.

Thanks for your insight,

-mj lee

Hello mjlee,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand that information that's being entered into your contacts is not being saved within iCloud. We'll be happy to help.

Our recommendation is to ensure that your iPad is updated to the latest version of iPadOS 15.6. This helps to provide software improvements that may help. If needed, here's how to update the software:

Update iPadOS

When you update to the latest version of iPadOS, your data and settings remain unchanged.

Before you update, set up iPad to back up automatically, or back up your iPad manually.

Update iPad automatically

If you didn’t turn on automatic updates when you first set up your iPad, do the following:

  1. Go to Settings  > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
  2. Turn on Download iPadOS Updates and Install iPadOS Updates.

When an update is available, iPad downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’re notified before an update is installed.

Update iPad manually

At any time, you can check for and install software updates.

Go to Settings  > General > Software Update.

The screen shows the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.

To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

Update using your computer

  1. Connect iPad and your computer with a cable.
  2. Do one of the following:
  • In the Finder sidebar on your Mac: Select your iPad, then click General at the top of the window.
    • To use the Finder to update your iPad, macOS 10.15 or later is required. With earlier versions of macOS, use iTunes to update your iPad.
    • In the iTunes app on your Windows PC: Click the iPad button near the top left of the iTunes window, then click Summary.

3.Click Check for Update.

4.To install an available update, click Update.

This information is outlined here: Update iPadOS - Apple Support

If that doesn't help, the next step is to temporarily turn off "Contacts" for iCloud. Then, let's turn it on and see if the information you're entering for your contacts are being saved without any issues. To do this, you can go to Settings > tap your name at the top > iCloud > Contacts. This is a step that may help.

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Kind regards.

Bryanr14, thanks for the reply, but my issue is not that Contacts don’t sync, it is just once in a while the notes in a single Contact do not sync right after I enter the text. It would be similar to if you changed a phone number in a contact, and the phone number got overwritten by the older data in the cloud. I guess what I need is a way to force a sync that would send the Contact up to the cloud.
