question about using migration assistant for old mac data to newer mac answered
hello, for those that are using migrate assistant from old mac to new mac on big sur, Monterey and other modern macs...
first time i had several failures at upgrade i just tried copying files and folders onto mac desktop so i could change file permissions, then pasted files into correct folders from desktop.. this sort of works but was time consuming. but at the time this is all that worked as migrating any
other way would lock up machine.
another method that seems to work ok that i used recently was to migrate all folders except application folders. this allows mac to boot and all files are there except the applications, then i would just copy the applications from time machine backups. then try to run each application, if an app had permissions issues or was out of date it would offer me that time to upgrade it or fix permissions thru helper. also do not write over any files that exist, or copy over utilities folders. i'm not sure why this method works and installing apps from migration assistant causes lockups except maybe gatekeeper software, or having apps that start at login such as fan app, or app tamer, or files that are no longer supported on new mac os.
hope this helps!
