Importing .epub files to Apple Books

Hello,

I'm trying to import an eBook to Apple Books and when I try to import any books, I get this error message, regardless if I try to drag the .epub file into the window or going to File->Import... "Importing: 0 of 1. Failed: 1".

Also, I notice I have trouble downloading books that I purchased on the Apple Bookstore. Wondering if it might be a file permissions issue or some weirdness with file paths?

epub files not working I've read through a few threads on this issue, mostly from some time ago, but none seem to offer a solution, or explanation as to why Apple have changed how books works so that any epub documents no longer work. I'm running Ventura but am aware that others have had issues with earlier os versions also. I have a library of several hundred epub books, direct from the publishers (not via apple store) & none work since updating to Ventura. I've tried deleting them & re-adding & even getting new epub files of some from the publishers. I've tried re-setting books also. I have seen some folks suggesting converting epub files to PDF but why do we, as customers, accept that? epub is a valid format & why should we allow Apple to do anything that means purchases aren't usable?

Books in Ventura Since I updated to Ventura on launching the Books app (14" M1 Pro MBP) any previously imported epub or pdf file gives me an error that says "Whatever the title is can't be found". The files show up in Books but just will not open. Books that were purchased open just fine. Any idea how to fix this?
