When you migrate from an old Mac to a new Mac, do you have to install 3rd party application (TurboTax, Banktivity, etc.) on the new Mac first or are the applications transferred from the old Mac during migration and installed on the new Mac?
It will depend on the system you have on your old Mac. If it is Mojave or older the apps on the old machine may not run on the new machine which will probably running Monterey. That's because with Catalina and newer only 64 bit apps will run. You can download and run the free GO64 app to see which of your apps will run on Monterey and which won't.
I normally run migration assistant an bring over all data including apps because that also brings over activation codes for those 3rd party apps making is much easier.

The problem with migrating apps is that the old version can come across and may not be compatible with a newer MacOS version.
I prefer to download and install the latest app versions after I've done the initial setup. It is important to find all the registration numbers for your apps before you do anything else.
