Airplay does not connect to iPhone 12
Attempt to stream a movie through my phone to AirPlay. The TV shows the 4 character code to input on my phone, but never plays the movie.

What is you model AirPlay-enabled receiving device? To what are trying to stream using AirPlay? It can be an Apple TV box, modern Mac, but select smart TVs and third party streaming devices are also compatible. List of third party AirPlay-enabled devices - Apple.
After entering the pairing code, the connection is between the iPhone and AirPlay receiving device is established. You then should see something mirrored or streamed to the TV screen.
If the content is paused, then press play again on the iPhone. Playback control stays on the sending device when using AirPlay.
Some content may not support AirPlay, or even block AirPlay. So it depends a bit on what you are trying to stream.
