Is it worth it to buy Apple's USB-C to USB adapter? Or can I just buy the cheaper, non-Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter? I was warned by my friend to not buy non-Apple accessories. But then my other friend said that it's just a USB port, so it doesn't matter.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you buy it from a reputable brand as well such as Anker, Belkin, and etc. People tend to opt for these brands (me too) to save a bit of money.
