Is this because of the update? All that happens is a dropdown menu that appears and the whole music app is unresponsive

What were you running before the update? You can try holding down option+cmd as you launch to open Music in its safe mode which might sometimes help. You can also try holding down option as you launch Music, then the choose library option, and reselect your library in case that preference has been corrupted.
