Help, moving iTunes library from Mojave to Music in Monterey.

Hi all,

I recently, a week ago, updated my MacBook Air from Mojave to Monterey. I really thought everything was in order and didn't wasn't terribly concerned about the iTunes to Music migration, boy was I wrong. I really hope someone can help me with this as I am extremely frustrated. I have been trying for a week now to accomplish this to absolutely no avail. My iTunes library consists of over 25k songs and a bunch of playlist and ratings. I do not want to lose the date added either as I have playlists that are tied to those dates. My library is on an external drive and needs to remain there as I don't have the space on the MacBook.

I have pored over a ton of postings about this and none of the solutions seem to work for me.

I have done the option click > choose library and nothing happens.

This is the structure of my iTunes library.

This is what Music looks like on first launch. It can sit here and spin nothing happens

Launch Music again, this is what I see.

Here is the path after the first launch.

And after I point it to where me files actually are.

And the new Music library with not files in it.

What am I doing wrong? Please help me. Thanks in advance.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.5

When you hold down the alt/option key as you launch Music you should get this dialog box:

If Music opens normally close it and try again.

You would click Choose Library..., select the old iTunes Library.itl file and then choose a location to save the converted library. Are you unable to get that dialog to show, or does it not process the .itl file correctly after selecting it?

If you don't mind losing your ratings, playlists, play counts, etc. then you can import the media you have with File > Add To Library... into the library you currently have but it would seem to be better to grab those details if you can. Make sure to set the media folder in Music to match the legacy location from iTunes, typically ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media, so Music doesn't generate new copies of the files that it imports.

Thanks for all your help so far tt2.

I do get that dialog.

I then selected the old iTunes .itl file.

Then selected the top level of the same external drive that the current iTunes media and library reside on.

Music then does this

Is this normal? Nothing seems to be happening on the Music side of things in Activity Monitor.

If I quit Music, I then get a media folder created but Music is still empty with no content and no playlists, nothing...

Perhaps the .itl file is not processed correctly as you mentioned. If so, what can I do to fix this.
