sent a friend to buy me an iphone 13 in the USA was delivered yesterday to Kenya but when i try setting it up displays my sim card is not supported

You're friend bought a phone locked to a carrier. You will need to contact that carrier and ask if they will unlock it. Most carriers require at least 1 year of service before they unlock it so don't be surprised if they don't.
For future reference, he should have bought an unlocked phone directly from Apple.
