imac is slow during start up and then hangs after entering password. then it just restarts. I’ve run the recovery but the problem persists.

The two most common reasons for an issue like this are issues with third party software or a failing drive. My guess is the hard drive is failing since the issue has gotten worse after reinstalling macOS.
You can try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect most drive failures so you may also want to run DriveDx to check the health of the hard drive. Try booting into Safe Mode.
Can you confirm the exact model of your iMac and version of macOS? Your signature is showing an iMac 24" (M1, 2021).
It is a 2013 model iMac 24” running Catalina version 10.15.7. I have run the disk utility and reinstalled the software (on Apples advice) which seems to of made it worse! Previously on switching on, the loading bar would at least get to the end. Now it barely progresses.
