Safari will not connect to web site, such as hotels, that require T&Cs

Safari will not connect to web site, such as hotels, that require Terms and Conditions before it will connect. This problem has been around for years over several Safari versions.

That is not the issue I am having, and updating Safari turns out to be not helpful. I finally got help from Apple for this. The problem is when I took Safari into a facility that had a requirement you had to accept their terms and conditions before they would allow you in. Safari blocked the Accept page from opening saying it was not secure. The solution is restart the Mac in Safe mode (hold down shift key on start-up. Then navigate to the site of concern. Now, in safe mode, the Accept page opens. You accept the terms and the site opens. Then restart again back into normal mode and Safari now performs as it should.

The question yet to be tested is whether this will work across all such sites or whether this only worked for the specific site I tested it with. The Apple support team believes this will work for all such sites.

Hello ppam,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

If you're seeing this occur with your MacBook Air as opposed to other Apple devices, see if quitting the Safari browser will allow the login information to appear as this is considered a captive network. In addition, you may need credentials from the hotel staff, so be sure you have the information needed from them. For assistance with closing an app completely, check out the steps below or here: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support

• To quit an app, choose App Name > Quit App in the menu bar. For example, choose Preview > Quit Preview (or press the keyboard shortcut Command-Q).

Keep in mind that if you click the Close button in the top-left corner of an app’s window, the window closes, but the app remains open (a small dot below the app’s icon in the Dock indicates that the app’s open).

If that's not helpful, confirm the current installed macOS version as well as more details on what occurs when you try to open a website with a captive network.

Have a great day!

You are right. Recent versions of Safari have been problematic on some computers. I think I can explain what might be happening. If you are unable to access certain web sites and possibly getting a message that your browser must be updated, this is not an unusual situation. The reason is that web site providers and software engineers write their software to work based on standardized specifications. Some web sites and older browser software may not be compatible. One thing that may work is to upgrade Safari or you can use another browser that does work such as Firefox or Chrome. They can be individually updated as needed. It is important to know that Safari is installed as part of the operating system and it normally it cannot be individually updated. Safari is typically updated when the computer's operating system (OS) is updated or upgraded. Finally, even if you are able to update Safari, there is no guarantee that it will be compatible with every web site. This is why many of us have more than one browser installed.
