iPad pencil

How would I be able to tell if iPad pencil is bad? I have rebooted iPad, disconnected pencil from iPad and reconnected. It tells me it is 100% charged. Yet it will not work on my iPad. This problem started yesterday. I have had this pencil for over 2 years.

If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad

  1. Make sure to center your Apple Pencil (2nd generation) on the magnetic connector on the right edge of the iPad. For an Apple Pencil (1st generation), remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.
  2. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.
  3. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
  4. On the same screen, look under My Devices for your Apple Pencil. If you see it, tap . Then tap Forget this Device.
  5. Connect your Apple Pencil in to your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds. 
  6. If you don't see the Pair button, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until you see the Pair button.
  7. If you still don’t see the Pair button, contact Apple Support.

Clearly, your Pencil is successfully pairing with - and charging from - your iPad.


This leaves two potential sources of difficulty - these being an issue with the Pencil transducer that interacts with the iPad screen hardware - or iPad App software.


If in previous attempts to diagnose difficulties with the Pencil (including changing the replaceable tip) have been unsuccessful, ot is very possible that the metal transducer beneath the replaceable tip may have been damaged. Damage can occur if the Pencil tip suffers an impact, or excessive lateral pressure.


When replacing the Pencil tip, ensure that the replaceable plastic pencil tip is screwed firmly (i.e., finger tight) into the body of the Apple Pencil; even a slightly loosened tip will cause issues. When correctly positioned, there should be a tiny gap (around the full circumference - of about the thickness of a sheet of paper) between the tip and the body of the Pencil.


If the transducer has suffered damage, the only remedy is replacement of the Pencil. Substitution with another Pencil will confirm or exclude a positive diagnosis. A visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store will provide opportunity to test your Pencil with another iPad - and your iPad with another Pencil.
