Here’s one of those longer answers (🙂) that explains both why you may be unable to update your iPad - and your available options. Should you be interested, you can read on…

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.5

For all of the above models, they cannot be updated to later major versions of iPadOS as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements (CPU performance and available RAM) for newer versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Newer models, not appearing in the above list, are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 15.6. For any model, if an update is available, it will be the most recent version of iOS/iPadOS that is supported by your iPad.

You may need to consider that compatible Apps for older models of iPad are increasingly difficult to find. App Developers have dropped all support for 32-bit devices - and most for iOS versions preceding iOS11/12/13. As older versions of Apps are removed from the Apple App Store, you’ll not be able to (re)download or install them - which may severely limit the usefulness and utility of your iPad. As such, if you want or need to access most current Apps, requiring more recent versions of iOS than your iPad is capable of support, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model.

Of current models, even the entry-level iPad9 has specifications and capabilities that will massively outperform older models of iPad - and is compatible with the vast majority of current Apps. Other models are more powerful still.

I hope this information provides clarity as to your available options - and the likely limitations of your current iPad.

If your signature is correct and you own the first generation iPad Air, which is on iOS 12.5.5, you cannot update past that version. Your iPad is too old, and lacks the Ram required to run iOS 13 or higher. If you need the higher OS versions, it's now time to retire your 9 year old iPad and move up to a newer, more modern iPad.

You may see longer responses, but this is the short and simple answer you need.

If you;'re referring to a first generation iPad Air, it's not capable of 13 or above; one running 12.4.2 through 12.5.5 will fall into this category.

If you;'re referring to a newer one, use a computer or the Software Update function in Settings to install 15.6. It's no longer possible to update to exactly 13.
