How to transfer a photo album to a hard drive

Open the Photos application, select the album you want to export, then File/Export album. Work through the screens until you are able to select where to export it and select the hard drive.

Oh- my apologies. I assumed you wanted to move the photo files in an album to an external hard drive, removing them from the device they are currently on. As you just wanted to export the pictures while keeping the originals, Eric Root's solution certainly applies.
You can't move an album to an external hard drive, but you can move the whole library. See here - Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support
That worked! Now I have many loose jpgs on an external drive. Creation data is still intact in photoshop.
