Contacts are saved on email accounts. For instance, my Apple ID is *******@gmail.com. So, for a long time my contacts were being saved to my gmail account. Then I changed my default contact list to iCloud & all the new contacts are now being saved to my iCloud account. To check where your contacts are being saved, click on settings>contacts>default account. Once you click on settings, then click contacts, then click accounts & you will see which accounts you have the contacts on for. If you only want the iCloud account on, click on the other accounts, turn off contacts, then tap Delete from My iPhone. If you notice contacts missing once you do that, just sign back into the account again by going to settings>contacts>accounts>add an account. And if you have duplicate contacts, you can merge contacts as well.

Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Use other contact accounts on iPhone - Apple Support

If you see duplicate contacts after setting up iCloud Contacts - Apple Support

I hope that helps.

-------

Troubleshooting Unwanted Contacts:

I. Disable, then Enable Contact in iCloud:

Log into iCloud on the phone. Then, tap Contacts in iCloud settings, making it green.

  1. Go To: Settings
  2. Tap: Your Name (Top-Item)
  3. Tap: iCloud
  4. Tap: Contact (so that it is greyed out)
  5. Tap: Contact (so that it is green)

No Success?...

Contact Apple Support:

  1. Go Here: If you See Duplicate Contacts after Setting Up iCloud Contacts - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: If you see duplicates in Contacts on iCloud.com, visit Apple Support for help.

Apple Contact Info:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there, as necessary
  • Why the Wait: Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)
