I’ve done almost everything I can think of but I still can’t type. The only thing I can do with the magic keyboard is use the trackpad.

It sounds like you've probably completed the steps on If you can't connect your iPad to your Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or Smart Keyboard Folio, correct? This way we can rule out a poor connection. If so and problems persist, then test with an alternate iPad if possible. Then Contact Apple Support for further assistance.
