Please identify your Specific Mac by model and year found in Apple Menu->About This Mac.
Then we can provide help on what exactly you can update to, and what hardware upgrades can be made if any.
FWIW, no 2010 Mac can be upgraded beyond High Sierra.

A Mid 2010 Mac Pro can be updated to Mojave.
Also, if they are running just Sierra, High Sierra is still an option.

As I said, nothing beyond High Sierra. Based on the OP, I assumed they are not running a Mac Pro.
