Wireless qi charger only works on second attempt (not the first time it touches the charger)

My iPhone 13 pro max will charge wirelessly but not the first time I put it on any Qi charger. I have to put it on the charger and then pick it up and put it down again within 2 seconds for it to start charging. If it’s off the charger for more than 3 seconds, it won’t work (you have to start over). This happens every time without fail on every single wireless charger I’ve tried (various brands and models). For example, when I turn off my car, the aux power plug cuts power to the charger. But when I turn power back on, I have to pick up my phone from the charger and quickly set it back down again to restart the charging. Running iOS 15.5 on 3-month old iPhone 13 pro max.

I think I solved the problem. When you first plug in a Qi charger, it does a self-test for a few seconds before it is ready. If there is a phone on it during this phase, they seem to calibrate themselves to ignore the added impedance of the phone’s charging coil. I had been placing my phone on my wireless chargers during their self-setup when I was having the charging problem. If I wait 5 seconds to place my phone on a charger after applying power to the charger, then the phone is recognized and charges normally the first time. Thanks for your help.

Hey there Heliman206,

While this may be due to an incompatibility between your iPhone and the wireless charger, this may also need to be something that you'll need to reach out to the wireless charger manufacturers about, but we'd like to help rule out what we can first:

  1. You mentioned that your iPhone has iOS 15.5, but the latest version is iOS 15.6.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. If you use a wired charger to charge your iPhone, does it have any issues as soon as you connect it to charge?
  3. Have you tested one of the Apple-branded MagSafe chargers? Just in case, check out this link for more details about it: MagSafe Charger

Cheers!
