Hi Folks,
on my (Windows) laptop, I can manually lock the screen by entering Ctrl+Alt+Del and choosing 'Lock'. I can do something very similar on my Linux laptop by choosing 'Suspend'.
I can't get back in to either machine until I re-enter the password.
How can I do the same thing on my iPhone 12 mini? I don't need a time-based auto-lock, I need a manual option.

There are two common options to trigger this…
… Press and hold volume up and side until you get the shutdown dialog, and select Cancel.
… Tap the side button five times, and select Cancel.
In either case, you’ll need to enter the passcode again.
Might want to disable Face ID, or have Require Attention enabled if you do want to use Face ID.

Simply press the on/off button on the right side of your iPhone to lock the screen
Your phone has Face ID, unless you never set it up manually disabled it, the iPhone will immediately unlock when the screen turns on because it sees you and validates your face.
Cover the camera before turning it on, and it will not unlock.
If you are not using Face ID, then reduce the amount of time before it locks in Settings->Face ID & Password.

tapping that button it doesn't lock the phone: I can still tap the screen and swipe up to open the desktop, without having to enter my password.
My iPhone has a password on it, but tapping that button doesn't force the phone to prompt for it. I still have to wait for the auto timeout, which in my case is set to 15 minutes.
