How to link printers to 2nd Mac?
I have 2 HP LaserJet printers connected by USB to MacBook Pro (with Catalina).
How can I make these printers accessible as well to new added MacBook Air 2 2022?
MacBook Air 11″, OS X 10.10

Laser Printers?
The typical way to connect laser printers is directly to your network, using an ethernet cable. Then they become network printers, and any device on your network can use them.
If these were dumb inkjet printers that could not possibly connect to a network, the way to connect them would be to check the [√] shared printer checkbox in their printer setup window on the MacBook Pro. Then when your MacBook Pro is on the network and booted up and not asleep, the MacBook Air could see them. After proper setup the MacBook Air, MacBook Air could use them to print.
In every case, you should be sure that
System Preferences > network > what ever you use...
IPv6 is set to "link-local-Only"
This allows the Mac's Bonjour/Discovery protocol to discover them and makes setup much easier.
Your home network is the Network you use at home.
It consists of Wi-Fi, possibly on 2.4GHz AND 5.0 GHZ, any Extenders or Access Points you may have added, and any Ethernet cables you may have connected. They all make up ONE network, which can be built from multiple different media.
WOW! Thank you! Just what I needed.
I'm waiting for ethernet adapter to arrive.
I am still blank/vague about placement/connection where to access/connect.
At present, one printer is ethernet connected to my MBP; it appears in SysPref>Printers on MBAir but OffLine
Second printer is ethernet connected to my router and appears on MBPro but not on MBAir
Both printers function normally from commands on MBPro. Neither functions from commands on MBA -- yet!
Everything going great!
both printers working at MBPro;
only monocrome LJ appears and prints on MBA
color LJ printer (still connected ethernet to MBPro)
But does not show anywhere on MBAir
Tried switch of ethernet cable from MBP to MBA --> nada!
--> I'm blocking
I switched the color LJ [LJC] ethernet cable off MBPro to the single router ethernet port
-- (which became open because i switched the monochrome LJ [LJM] ethernet out of router to the MBAir via ethernet-usb-c adapter.
That change made no difference in what was/is showing in MBAir SysPref for Printers and Network windows (even after a restart).
And I am still able to print from MBPro in spite of this change.
When I choose the Add Printer key on MBA, it doesn't show anything like your example above with long list; mine only showsthe single LJM printer and nothing else.
so let me test my understanding:
MacBook Pro is connected to your network by Wi-Fi.
LaserJet color is cabled via Ethernet to the port on the Router.
LaserJet color shows in the add-a-printer box on the MacBook Pro, can be added and works to actually Print.
MacBook Air is connected to your network by Wi-Fi.
Laserjet mono is connected by Ethernet cable (using adapter) to the MacBook Air.
¿MacBook Air shows no Printers at all in its Add-a-printer page?
MacBook Pro is connected to your network by Wi-Fi. = correct
LaserJet color is cabled via Ethernet to the port on the Router. No longer because I changed it -->
--> it was connected to MBPro via ethernet to MBPro (I suspect that ethernet connect was not function
because there was a simultaneous usb connect which is still functional
but now it is connected to MBPro via usb and functional.
MacBook Air is connected to your network by Wi-Fi. = correct
Laserjet mono is connected by Ethernet cable (using adapter) to the MacBook Air. = correct
MacBook Air shows no Printers at all in its Add-a-printer page?
not correct but only because it lists only the LJ mono "connected by Ethernet cable (using adapter) to the MacBook Air."
OK my system now is as follows:
[1] busiest printer LJ mono is connected to MBAir via ethernet & usb-c adapter and is functional from both computers.
[2] least busy color LJ printer connected by both ethernet and usb to MBPro and is functional there only;
and I did check the Share LJ color on the network.
LJ color printer does not appear on MBAir at all.
And when I switch the ethernet cable of the color LJ from MBPro to the router ethernet port --> It makes no difference in result at all; it remains absent/invisible at MBAir.
Both computers networks iPv6 are Link-local only configured.
I greatly appreciate your extended assistance!
Jan Hedlund, thank you for joining the discussion.
I had reached an impasse. I'm no worse off than when I started.
Which was when I added the new MacBook Air 13" M2 chip 2022 running Monterey
with eventual intent to sideline my MacBook Pro 2012 running Catalina.
I have been Mac exclusive since late 1980. I am novice as to computers!
I always have had a strong aversion to doing things with Network/TCP/LAN et al.
I'm retired so this problem while frustrating has been kind of fun puzzle to work.
I will now cease & desist at this point and follow your recommendations.
Grant Bennet-Alder was Helpful and educational!
Like my router (a former Time capsule) my printers are older and there are much newer (?expensive) models.
So I am off the locate a Wi-Fi router with built-switch and 4 LAN ports.

Yes, there are so many Wi-Fi router models. You can easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on the latest models. However, if a lower speed is sufficient, and the latest features are not needed, there are some routers for as little as USD 30. Just one example below.
https://www.asus.com/us/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-Routers/ASUS-WiFi-Routers/RTN12_D1/
I ordered/received the above router ASUS RT-N12 Wireless-N Router. Appeared to be perfect for my situation.
So turned it on and connected to my cable modem and the color LJ and the mono LJ printers by ethernet to the router:
Things seemed to be fine -- and then all **** broke lose (probably because I incorrectly clicked on some(?) key):
Biggest problem: It could NOT locate the wi-fi network I have used for years and universally!!!
With help from AppleCare I was able to access ASUS website successfully and proceed (via iPhone) -- including a username and [gawd help me] a password which I promptly forgot!!!! and have been completely bummed out at trying to retrieve/rectify since.
And the stuff in their manual/website has utterly useless in trying to rectify my mistake or proceed with setup
They manual indicates some necessary website is supported to open automatically(?) -- I have no info how -- to complete the setup.
So I am stymied at recovering my wi-fi network; I'm using some network that has been created by ASUS and is connected to internet via hotspot of my iPhone using this foreign network (but only on MBPro).
Its is working on my MBPro but NOT on MBAir.
Serendipitously Both printers are present on the MBPAir functional!
Both are listed on MBPro but NOT functional because both are Off-line.
[Why Apple won't let me stop writing Bold only Jobs know!].
I deleted the mono printer and then tried to add it back -- neither LJ is present in the Add window on MBP.
So with (partially functioning) new router I'm able to access internet (here) withMBPro via iPhone hotspot.
No internet connection via MBAir.
Both Printers functional from MBAir;
Neither printer functional from MBP.
Contacted ASUS who told me to re-set the router which I tried to do -- do not know if I succeeded or not.
I hope to be able to see Apple Communities tomorrow morning.
Hello again,
Does your manual look something like this?
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-N12_D1/E7901_RTN12_D1_Manual.pdf
Since you are in contact with both AppleCare and ASUS, I will not go into details at this stage. However, do not hesitate to ask, if necessary.
Just a few notes:
Check that your cable modem is connected to the single WAN port.
Remember that you have to create a new Wi-Fi network on the new router (to replace your old Wi-Fi network).
If a setup page does not appear automatically, you should be able to access a web-based user interface manually via a normal web browser (an address 192.168.1.1 is mentioned on page 22 in the above manual). It ought to be possible to connect temporarily for setup from one of the computers, either by Ethernet cable to a free LAN port, or wirelessly.
Good luck!
Spent some more time with AppleCare -- helped
Referred to ISP. But at time received a call from ASUS tech support who were very helpful in trying to solve this mess
BUT as nearing completion when trying to complete -- guess What?: Invalid user name and password X >10 .
As struggling that -- disconnected and have not been able to reconnect -- ASUS will call back in 24-48 hous
I think this product is good but setup manual is useless. Tech very helpful . . . .
If you have really lost the password, but are willing to start over -- I mean fresh out of the box start over -- almost all devices like this have a DEEP reset (may require a straightened paper clip to actuate) that will CLEAR it completely and send it back to factory defaults for everything.
Yes, as Grant Bennet-Alder also indicated, there is a reset button on the ASUS router. See page 8 in the above manual.
After this, you could try to (temporarily) connect an Ethernet cable from your MacBook Pro to a free LAN port (for example, LAN3) on the router.
The cable modem should be connected to the WAN port of the router. You may have to power cycle the router and the modem, and restart the computer.
Unless a setup page opens automatically when you launch a web browser, just enter 192.168.1.1 in the address field (see page 22 in the above manual).
Please let us know if you can see the main setup page (page 23 in the manual), or if the Quick Internet Setup (QIS) has appeared automatically (page 24 in the manual).
Thank you both for reply!!!

At the moment it is near disaster:
I have NO wi-fi network -- I am accessing internet via iPhone hotspot from MBPro.
I spent hours yesterday with ASUS, twice they tried to lead me from resetting the router and made considerable progress, then each time something went wrong and no fix ever reached.
They sent me a long email today again describing the correction process -- haven't had time yet to read and undertake the task
And have now seen your valuable replies but again have not had time to start and work through.
I will work with all info/procedures suggested as best I can - I am no computer jock, obviously -- I am still exhausted, but you all have restored some hope.
