How to link printers to 2nd Mac?

I have 2 HP LaserJet printers connected by USB to MacBook Pro (with Catalina).

How can I make these printers accessible as well to new added MacBook Air 2 2022?

MacBook Air 11″, OS X 10.10

Laser Printers?

The typical way to connect laser printers is directly to your network, using an ethernet cable. Then they become network printers, and any device on your network can use them.

If these were dumb inkjet printers that could not possibly connect to a network, the way to connect them would be to check the [√] shared printer checkbox in their printer setup window on the MacBook Pro. Then when your MacBook Pro is on the network and booted up and not asleep, the MacBook Air could see them. After proper setup the MacBook Air, MacBook Air could use them to print.

In every case, you should be sure that

System Preferences > network > what ever you use...

IPv6 is set to "link-local-Only"

This allows the Mac's Bonjour/Discovery protocol to discover them and makes setup much easier.

If you cannot find a reason for the password problem, it may become necessary to return to the router's setup page 192.168.1.1 in order to rewrite the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and WPA2 password (key).

I am not at all surprised at this! Will try when calmed down some.

Must remember how to do it???

I think it was turn router off and disconnect everything except MBPro ethernet.

Then use browser to enter 192.168.1.1 go from there --> new name for router, new password (hopefully without any screw ups!

HP LaserJet CP1525nw (3826F7)

HP LaserJet M203-M206

I don't know what other details are or where available.

They remain totally messed up -- absent or non functional (or intermittently available) on both computers.

Yes, isn't this where I/we started 4 pages ago?

How about connect both printers to the new router by ethernet from both computers?

(Not so incidentally, my thermostat is now available by wi-fi internet from iPhone!.)

Drivers appear to be available from HP (for each model, for macOS 10.15 Catalina and macOS 12 Monterey):

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-m203-printer-series/9365400

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-cp1525-color-printer-series/4052975/model/4052979

If HP Easy Start does not work (or is not suitable), you may want to try HP Easy Admin (which does not require a connection to a printer):

I do not know whether you have drivers already for both printers, for both operating systems.

Thank you. I will have to try to work this out later (?tomorrow).

I am downloading from the 2-3 url's listed above

I do not know whether you have drivers already for both printers, for both operating systems.

--> Neither do I know what I've got or don't have.

If you did not either delete the instance of the printer connected by USB or 'Reset the Printing System', you may need to do one of those to make progress. --> I have no knowledge about either of these and whether or not I did them

I have downloaded the apps from the url's in the post above by Jan Hedlund

But I am too exhausted to work with them for now --> later and then I'll come back.

Thank you both again for keeping me in this!

Before you start working with the computers, here is a quick test for you, not involving any software:

a) The monochrome printer (HP LaserJet M203-M206) is connected by Ethernet cable to LAN port 1 of the ASUS router.

b) The colour printer (HP LaserJet CP1525nw) is connected by Ethernet cable to LAN port 2 of the ASUS router.

No other cables are used (no Ethernet, no USB, no USB-to-Ethernet adapter).

The MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers are wirelessly connected to the ASUS router.

The iPhone and both iPads are wirelessly connected to the ASUS router.

Now to the test.

Some M203-M206 printer models seem to support the AirPrint technology.

If you use one of the iPads, and try to print (according to the link below), without installing any extra app, does the M203-M206 appear as an AirPrint printer? Is it possible to print?

OK, I see now that both Printers are either absent or listed Offline and non-functional.

...full-featured drivers solution will be used for both printers when it comes to printing from the Mac computers.

This is solution I prefer; so that means I go to:

attempt to add the M203-M206 as an AirPrint printer on the network (on both computers).

See Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK).

Correct?

I have post-baccalaureate degrees -- I never encountered anything as complex as this!!

As I read your last post:

OK. I guess that a full-featured drivers solution will be used for both printers when it comes to printing from the Mac computers. --> my wish.

However, in the meantime, you could perhaps run a similar AirPrint test (with the M203-M206) from the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Begin by resetting the printing system (see Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)) on both computers. --> skip this.

. . . attempt to add the M203-M206 as an AirPrint printer on the network (on both computers).

See Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK).

About AirPrint – Apple Support (UK).

--> So this is what I do? Using the app downloads from HP that I got yesterday?

Under all circumstances, the printers shall stay connected by Ethernet to the LAN ports (1 and 2) on the router. Do NOT use any USB connection. --> Probably the only thing I understand!

>Yes, both printers appeared on the iPad

I was a bit surprised to see this.

The CP1525nw is not listed as a supported model in the About AirPrint - Apple Support (US edition, July 01, 2022), nor in the About AirPrint – Apple Support (UK) (UK edition, July 07, 2022).

However, I checked a very old (February 13, 2012) iOS: AirPrint 101 Apple article (HT4356), and there it was;

HP LaserJet Pro CP1525nw Color Printer.

So, it may be an old/limited AirPrint version. Old printer firmware? By all means, try AirPrint here as well. You could begin with the iPad, and then test from the computers.

Huh?! This further exacerbates my apprehensions!

I truly do not have any idea what/HOW to do next!? Utter confusion/lost!

I do not want to skip what you are writing/posting! Just understand so I can DO it.

I am in process of trying to use the HP Easy Start.app & HP Easy Admin.app to fix.

+/- success. I will have to repeat/try again and again.

If I keep both printers connect by ethernet to the router, everything works.

HP says no cables of any kind for their apps.

So I am trying to work this through by HP apps with & without the ethernet cables from printers to router.

Be back when finished . . .

Grant Bennet-Alder I am seeing some results resembling parts of your post.
