No internet when connecting MacBook Pro to iPhone via Personal Hotspot

Hello, for some reason I am no longer able to access the internet via my iPhone personal hotspot. I have Reset Network Settings on my iPhone. I have deleted and repaired iPhone with laptop. I have connected the devices with USB cable and synched....

-My iPhone does appear under Personal Hotspot on my laptop and connects

-My iPhone does show up as a device under Bluetooth Preferences, and when will say 'Connected' for a split second but not maintain the connection.

I would be so grateful for some advice, as I really need to get it sorted quickly for work, and have spent so much time already trying to get my head round this... :)

Hello LalieW,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. You've tried some great troubleshooting steps so far.

Make sure that you have completed the following steps from the 'Use these steps first' section of If Personal Hotspot is not working on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) to make sure the basics are set up correctly.

"Try connecting again after each step.

  1. Check that Personal Hotspot is turned on in Settings > Personal Hotspot. If you can't find or turn on Personal Hotspot, check that your wireless carrier enabled it and that your wireless plan supports it.
  2. Restart the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot and the other device that needs to connect to Personal Hotspot.
  3. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  4. On the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings.

Use the steps below for more help with Personal Hotspot over Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth."

Then, you can try USB or Wi-Fi connection. Since it sounds like you are currently using USB, do the following from the corresponding section of the same article.

"Connect your Mac to Personal Hotspot with USB

  1. Update to the latest version of iTunes
  2. With a USB cable, connect your Mac to the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot. If prompted, trust the device.
  3. Make sure that you can locate and view your iPhone or iPad in iTunes or the Finder. If your Mac doesn't recognize your device, try a different USB cable.
  4. Go to System Preferences > Network, then select iPhone USB. If you don’t see it, click the Add button and add it.
  5. Click the More button, choose Make Service Inactive, then click Apply.
  6. Click the More button, choose Make Service Active, then click Apply. If you already have a different network connection, your Personal Hotspot connection might not activate until you uncheck “Disable unless needed” and click Apply."

If the same continues, try Wi-Fi as well. You can further isolate by testing another device to see if it can connect to your iPhone's Personal Hotspot or trying to connect your Mac to another network to see what happens.

Take care.
