Your mac has screen recording functionality built-in, in the Screenshot application, and also in Quicktime Player.

You can launch Screenshot by pressing Command-Shift-5, click on one of the choices to record the whole screen or a selected area, and press record.

Motion itself does not do screen recording, but of course you can record what happens in Motion as described above.

Hi

In macOS, all your applications are in the applications folder. If you can't immediately see the quicktime player on your system, then go to your applications folder and check there. From there you can shortcuts to your desktop and add to your dock.

The screen recording app that uses the cmd shift 5 shortcut is called Screenshot. It records voice by default. When you enter the app with the keyboard shortcuts, you should see an overlay UI appear. Use the options menu in that UI to set your audio and microphone preference. Note that Screenshot was introduced with Mohave, so it will not be available in Sierra mac.

For the Sierra mac, there are a number of alternatives out there, many of them for free on the mac App store. I personally use Loom.com - which records and then lets you share a link for others to view.

I actually use Loom as much as I can, because the recordings are saved in the cloud (you can download anytime to your mac)...and this saves a lot of space. Screen recordings directly from quicktime or from Screenshot go to your hard drive, and depending on your settings, can start to hog a lot of room.

I think (not 100%) sure, that you can still record through quicktime on the Sierra, as that function was already available before Mohave and Screenshot. If you open quicktime and go to the file menu - you should see options there to record your screen.

Hi Less,

Thank you for responding so quickly and thoroughly. I’m not locating the Quicktime Player. That’s what the internet says I should use, too- but I can’t find it.

I have a MacBook Air, macOS Monterey(2020 version), M1 I bought in 2022 and a Mac OS Sierra (early 2015). Both are laptops. I cannot find the Quicktime Player on either one.

The old laptop does not respond to command shift 5. I tried it on the new laptop and it doesn’t look like it does what we want.

My kiddo wants to screen record their games with commentary (same time) on the old laptop.

  1. Where do you find Quicktime player on the old Sierra laptop?
  2. Where do you find Quicktime player on the new MacBook Air?
  3. Does the command shift 5 allow voiceover the recording? I didn’t see that option.

Hopefully you know how to find Quicktime when the search comes up empty.

Thank you and hope to hear back soon!

Yes, you can do screen recordings in Quicktime Player in Sierra, at least if I remember it correctly; or if not, the old QuickTime Player 7 can (if you have it; it does run in Sierra, but I am not sure if it was included or was just there on my mac.

As to space on the drive, I don’t think that is a limitation at all. In fact, you can choose the location, and you can of course also copy things to the cloud afterwards if necessary. The initial recording will always use RAM and some space in the drive, regardless of where it is saved in the end.
