Microsoft has Mx native versions of Office available for the latest releases.

If you have a MS 365 subscription, I highly recommend using the App Store versions instead of the versions direct from MS.

Much cleaner update process.

Just figured it out. Needed to download Rosetta for it to be compatible with the new macbook air.
