I put off uninstalling Adobe Flasher Player on my MacBook Pro (OS Catalina) - but need to uninstall it now, as a pop up reminder again asked me to do this as it was discontinued some time ago. I am not computer savvy so please could I have advice on what I need to download to replace Adobe to enable me to watch online movies /bbc iplayer etc., with English subtitles to follow the spoken word. Thank you!

As you point out Flash was killed by Adobe years ago. In fact Adobe also killed the ability for Flash content to be played anywhere so your comments don't make much sense. Websites replaced Flash content with HMTL5 long ago and all modern browsers support it. You don’t need to replace Flash with anything. And if any website is truly still using Flash you should avoid it like the plague as it will certainly be loaded with malware and all manner of nasty baddies.
Uninstall Flash immediately and you will find you can still watch videos without issues.

Web sites have not used Flash for several years. There is no longer any Flash content so there is no need for a Flash Player.
