iPhone 12 not playing music through USB in car

I have an iPhone 12 that’s completely up to date (ios15.6.1) but when I connect it to my car with a usb to lightning cable the car recognises an “iPod” has been plugged in and charges the phone but it won’t play anything even though on the phone the song is playing. I’ve tried podcasts, Spotify and Apple Music as well as voice directions on Google maps and all are the same.

the car does not have CarPlay and it definitely isn’t the cable as my husband has an identical iPhone and it works fine for him.

I’ve seen the previous advice to restart the phone/car but nothing works and I’m at my wits end. It’s very frustrating having to choose between charging my phone and having music in my car!!

Hey there Sallehbear,

We recommend working through the steps below to help when trying to connect your iPhone to your car through USB:

1. Restart your device and your car.
2. Make sure that your device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
3. If possible, try to connect using another cable or USB port. Check the manual that came with your car to learn how to connect an Apple device.
4. Check your charging port for any debris or damage. Make sure that your charging cable is properly inserted into the port.
5. Update your device.
6. Make sure that your stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
7. Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support.
