Apple does not publicize or notify you of any Airpods firmware updates.

Apple does not provide instructions to update the firmware on Airpods. It is supposed to automatically happen.

What I have done in the past:

Connect iPhone to wifi and power.

Connect the case for Airpods to charger, place next to phone.

Connect Airpods to phone, play something for a minute or more.

Put the Airpods back in the case next to the phone.

Walk away for around 20 minutes. Leave the phone and Airpods alone.
