The only reason to have backups is because your data is valuable.
Having no backups means data has little or no value, or can be easily regenerated.
It appears this data is worthless to you, so there’s no reason to create a backup prior to the macOS update.
If the above is incorrect and if your data does have value to you, well, get a hard disk of 4 to 6 terabytes, and get Time Machine going. Or get some other backup tool going.
(iCloud files and documents storage is better than having no backups, but not enough better.)
Agree with razmee209, but soon as possible, it;s just when, not if your drive will die.
