Cursor jumps to lower left of screen when maximizing or minimizing FCPX

When I maximize or minimize FCPX on my MBP M1 Max, the cursor, after a short pause, jumps to the lower left of the screen. When minimizing, it actually behaves as though it is way off in that direction because I have to swipe 5 or 6 times to get it to reappear. When maximizing, it just moves to the bottom left, and I can move it back with one swipe. (I'm using a "magic mouse".) This is the only app for which I've seen this behavior, so far (I checked Safari, Logic Pro X, Word, and a few others.) I found a thread with a similar problem where toggling off "Preferences / Accessibility / Zoom / Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom" fixed it, but here it made no difference.

Hello CJ-Rock,

Ensuring your cursor remains where it was last moved on the display is important and we're glad you had the chance to isolate the issue to only happening in Final Cut Pro X. Since having this issue have you confirmed Final Cut Pro X is updated to the latest version? If not,

  1. "Open the App Store.
  2. In the sidebar, click Updates.
  3. Click Update next to an app to update only that app, or click Update All."

How to manually update apps on your Apple device

If the issue continues after updating or Final Cut Pro X is already updated to the latest version, the next step would be to test in a new test admin user account. To create a test admin user account, please go in to System Preferences > Users & Groups, if the lock icon is closed, click the lock and enter the current admin user account password, then click the (+) icon to add a new test admin user account. Once created, click the Apple logo towards the top-left, followed by Log Out [your user account]. After logging out, log in to the test admin user to see if the issue persists.

Let us know how that goes!

Hello CJ-Rock,

Thank you for providing the additional information. Next, let's test to see if the issue occurs in a different user account by completing the steps below that are also listed here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac
If your Mac has multiple users, you should set up an account for each person so each can personalize settings and options without affecting the others. You can let occasional users log in as guests without access to other users’ files or settings. You can also create groups that include the user accounts on your Mac. You must be an administrator of your Mac to perform these tasks.
Users & Groups preferences for a selected user. At the top of the pane are the Password and Login Items tabs. Below that is the user name and the Change Password button. At the bottom is an Open button for opening the user’s Contacts card. Options also appear to allow the user to reset a password using their Apple ID and to allow the user to be an administrator of this computer.
Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
2. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.

Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.

Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.

Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to or change settings on the computer. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.

For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.

4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.
7. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:
For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”
For an administrator, select “Allow user to reset a password using Apple ID.”
Use Sharing preferences to specify whether the user can share your files and share your screen.
For information about Apple’s privacy policy, see the Apple Privacy Policy website.
If your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID, a new user can add a fingerprint after logging in to the Mac.

This will let us know if the issue is caused by any of the current settings in the current user account that is experiencing the issue.

Best regards

Hi Todd0213,

Many thanks for your reply. I checked that my Final Cut Pro X is up to date. I then did as you suggested, declining to authorize any plugins as FCPX started up, and the problem did not occur in the Test Admin account I created. But then when I logged back into my original account, the problem did not occur then either, with no other changes knowingly made by myself. (And btw I had tried rebooting to fix this, previously, with no luck.) So then I closed FCPX and reopened it (in the same, original account) and the same problem then reappeared. Then I tried again (just shutting down FCPX, then restarting) and the problem stopped again. So unfortunately it's intermittent.

So then I re-logged back in as Test Admin, and the bug did not appear despite many quits and restarts of FCPX.

When FCPX loads in my original account, I do get an error message that the plugin "TemplateStopper" is not supported for Apple Silicon. I would disable that plugin as suggested, but since it's not being loaded I doubt that it's the problem. I'd happily experiment with disabling all the plugins - but how does one manage plugins in FCPX? I could not find a plugin manager like Logic Pro X has.

Btw I've also noticed some rather more serious bugs (?) in Logic Pro X (I can't resize audio or midi windows without the data getting corrupted).

Thanks!
