AirTag not connecting

i just bought an AirTag and it won’t sync to my iPhone. It brings up an error message every time I try to connect it. It says that I have to sign into my iCloud account. I’m of course logged into my account. I’ve done a factory reset and networks already. Anyone else have any ideas I can try?
