Hello jean-claude161,

It sounds like you may be trying to install the macOS Monterey onto your Mac.

First, make sure that your Mac can support the software. Here's a guide to help you check: macOS Monterey is compatible with these computers - Apple Support. After verifying that the Mac is compatible, you can follow these steps to update the software: How to upgrade to macOS Monterey - Apple Support. Step 1 on this page will also provide a list of eligible Mac devices that will support the software.

macOS Monterey is compatible with the following computers. If your Mac isn't compatible, you might be able to install an old version of macOS instead.

MacBook Pro introduced in 2015 or later
MacBook Air introduced in 2015 or later
MacBook introduced in 2016 or later
Mac mini introduced in 2014 or later
iMac introduced in late 2015 or later
iMac Pro
Mac Studio
Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later
View the complete list of compatible computers.

Also, you mentioned 'kernel.' Did you see a kernel panic error?

If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a kernel panic occurred, and a message indicates that your computer restarted because of a problem.

The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.

You can see this information and more here: If your Mac restarts and a message appears - Apple Support.

This page also offers information about kernel errors and potential issues you may encounter due to problems within your Mac: If your Mac restarted because of a problem - Apple Support.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!
