The serial number is printed on the system itself, somewhere.
Strangely, Apple think it's OK to print it in 4pt text, in grey, on a silver background, which may be why you've never noticed it before. It is there, though.
The specifics of where, though, depend on the actual machine. You don't mention your hardware model to be able to advise further.
