iPOD Mini Syncing Back Up Restore

I have a Gen 2 iPod MINI that has been unused for some years. It is not showing as one of my associated devices on my iTunes Account though it was years ago. (I selected a Classic below because you have no option for MINI...)

1) How do I get it associated with my account?

2) I would like to back it up in case it needs to be restored, none of the content was purchased. But is a subset of what is in my library.

3) How do I synch it without affecting the device library or PC library? Do I go into device options check manually manage and then click on synch?

  1. See Authorization vs. association - Apple Community. Association is a property of iOS devices and computer. Note it is a limitation, not a benefit.
  2. iOS devices can be backed up. iOS backups do not include media. iPod mini is not an iOS device. If you have media on the device that isn't in your library see Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community.
  3. If you really don't want anything to be affected then you wouldn't sync it. See Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer - Apple Support. Sync is essentially computer to device, although purchases may transfer to the library, and once a device has been synced changes to playlists, ratings, and play counts can sync in either direction. Backup your library frequently.

Either you configure the device to sync with your library, or you set it up for manual management. When the device is configured for manual management you should be able to browse its contents, and edit playlists and metadata directly on the device. When syncing all changes are made in the library, and then you sync to update the device with any changes that have been made to the selection of content you previously selected for syncing to the device.
