Safari goes black with CNN stream, not Chrome. Why?

Folks, I prefer to use Safari and for a while there's this anomaly where Safari will stream CNN, but often after a commercial break the video goes black and the audio plays. This has been going on through several updates of macOS and Safari. Chrome does not have this issue and I'd prefer not to have to use another browser just for one site.

I've turned off extensions and checked various preferences in Safari, and have tried this on a new user account. The results are the same.

Anyone know what the cause of this is?

Currently on macOS 12.5 and Safari Version 15.6 (17613.3.9.1.5)
