Why force the left slide over?

Why can’t I turn off the left slide over tab? It gets in my way more often than it is useful. I’ve been using Apple products since 1984 and the UI is getting worse and worse.

A true user-centric design would allow for configurability, not forcing some designer’s brilliant ideas down my throat.
