How do you turn off Find My *permanently* on a Mac, remotely?
Hi,
I have a Mac that a grad student enabled Find My on and forgot to disable before he graduated.
Following the "How to remove Activation Lock" article, we've found that removing a Mac from the Devices list on https://www.icloud.com/find/ will *temporarily* remove the Mac from Find My and allow one to bypass Activation Lock to reinstall an OS. The problem is that, after you reinstall the OS, set up a new account and get online, Find My automatically gets reactivated with the original student. This is not what we want.
Before I ask the student again, I want to know exactly what will work to remove the Mac from his iCloud account.
The "Remove a device in Find My on Mac" *suggests* that, taking the Mac offline, having the student go to icloud.com/find an *erase* the device, putting the Mac back online, waiting for the device to erase, and then having the student remove the Mac from the device list would remove the device from his Find My; but it is not super clear to me that this will work.
Has anyone had success fully removing an iCloud user from a Mac, following these steps? Is there any way to streamline the process (besides using Apple School Manager in the first place or trying to find the purchase receipt which would be a headache)?
At this point, I'm tempted to see if I can set up a Zoom, have the student sign into iCloud on the Mac (we've wiped out his account already on the machine), and then sign back out - might be faster.
Thanks!
