Need to update payment info on my phone, will not add unless I download the corresponding app but cannot download app because of needing to update payment info

Am not sure what the "corresponding app" may be ... maybe you are trying to update payment details on the App Store.

You may want to see if you can smoothly update your payment details via your Apple ID account online.

✽. Seems you need to add new payment details before you can delete the old ones ...

... (especially if you have regular payments etc.)
