Hello,

The phones are somewhat water resistant, however, they can still sustain water damage.

Start here:

If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone X or later

Also see:

About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later 

Water and other liquid damage to iPhone or iPod isn't covered by warranty
