Volume on Bluetooth goes to max upon connection.

Hello, as a preface, I am in IT support, so I will try to provide as much detail as possible to help diagnose the problem.

The issue: I have repeatedly had this issue when I connect my Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones, the volume on my iPhone goes immediately to maximum and the music blasts my ears.

Obviously, this is a very painful thing and potentially damaging to the headphones. The current conditions are: iPhone SE (1st Gen), happened on every iteration of iOS, currently on 15.6.1. Headphone Safety is at 85db (I have verified this works when turning up the headset just to make sure I could trust it).

I have 2 Bluetooth devices recently used. EarFun Air (used last night) and my Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones (just now) all updates applied with no change to this issue. Connected to car via CarPlay on the way in to work today.

Today, when I connected the Sony headphones while sitting at my desk (ANC is a indispensable), I visually checked the volume (before hitting play) and it was at about 30% (reasonably quiet). Then when I hit play, the volume immediately jumped all the way up to maximum (much to my surprise) and blasted my ears.

How can we fix this? I don't really want to keep "testing" it on my Sony headphones because they are more than AirPods Pro but at the same time, I don't want to ruin them or damage my ears.

Any advice you can offer would be great.

Thanks

iPhone SE, iOS 15
