Where is rating data stored?

Here's my setup: I have my music library on a [Home]/Dropbox/Music directory, full of mp3s. I'm using the Cloud Sync feature to play music on my phone and other devices, including a folder of smart playlists the depend heavily on star rating.

Is that rating data written directly to the local files? Is it recoverable from the library directory, if the MacOS install were to fail? In short, how do I back up this metadata correctly?

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

Yes, you can backup the Music Library.musiclibrary database independently of the media folder, particularly if your media is in a separate location. You need to be able to backup both components to be able to restore the state of the library.
