Permanently disable split screen on iPad?

On my iPad I accidentally entered split screen, which I absolutely loathe, and I can’t find a way to turn it off.

Yes, I know how to minimize the new window, but it never goes away. It is always protruding in whatever I’m doing. Constantly distracting.

Every guide says something about disabling multitasking, but that button DOES NOT EXIST. No idea why people keep giving that advice. Did they remove the ability to turn off this utterly useless and aggravating “feature”?

If so, please give us control back. If not, where do I turn it off?

thanks,

Doug

PS - Why won’t Apple allow me to sign in with my previous user name? That’s stupidly aggravating, too.

Presumably your iPad is running iPadOS15.

Unlike iPadOS14 and earlier versions, multi-tasking cannot be disabled from settings. Multi-tasking has received a significant overhaul, both simplifying its use and introducing new controls.

Key to accessing and controlling (or avoiding) multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” (ellipsis) button that is found at the top-centre edge of the screen.
