Printer access

My Epson XP-410 printer can’t print-out on paper by USB cable with my new MacBook Air (M2 chip). But the scanning and copying features of the printer work. Printing with my 2016 MacBook Pro worked. After couple weeks with Apple and Epson technical support, I found myself repeating the same troubleshooting without result. I don’t like to give up but found a comment online with no explanation that Epson software doesn’t work with Rosetta 2. Consumer Reports wrote they stopped reviewing Epson printers due to feedback from their members. I liked this printer, but am looking for another brand that I can be sure works with new Apple processor chips. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Hi,

Have you tried to connect the existing printer to a network? The reason for asking is that the Epson XP-410 is listed as a supported printer in About AirPrint - Apple Support. An AirPrint model can be used without additional drivers, provided that the printer and the Mac computer are connected to the same network (subnet, Wi-Fi router). An AirPrint printer is compatible with macOS.

You would just have to connect the printer wirelessly to your Wi-Fi router. If supported by the router, WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) may make the setup a bit easier.

The MacBook Air would already be connected to this Wi-Fi network.

Not sure about how the scanner is handled in this case.

Normally, Image Capture (in macOS) can be used for scanning (an ICA scanner driver for the model in question may be needed; see link below).

If necessary, you could perhaps try to (temporarily) disconnect the network and switch to a USB connection merely for scanning purposes.

You could test AirPrint via an Iphone/iPad as well.

Addendum

If there is a problem with AirPrint discovery for one or more devices, you may want to try the following full procedure (in this order):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the MacBook Air, and all other devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the MacBook Air. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

Your suggestions got my Epson to print wireless. Had to figure out a few things on the way though. Trial and error. The Epson has a Wi-Fi wizard setup to use but there were still problems. It came down to deleting my printer from preferences and adding a new one that suddenly appeared. My old printer’s name is EPSON XP-410 Series and the new one is EPSON XP-410 (IP) which is the one that finally worked. I kept both listed. The scanner works wireless too but I also had to add a new address. One was an address similar to my server and the other one was a weird string of letters and numbers. That one didn’t work. The first one did. When scanning I get to toggle between EPSON XP-410 (Network 01) and one named EPSON-410 Series (USB) which works when the cable is attached. Getting choice of both systems. Thanks to everything for your thoughts and suggestions. Much appreciated.
