So last night right after a call my signal bars where replaced by "no service" so I turned my phone off and then back on and now I get this message :

I called apple support and they mentioned I should go to AT&T because it's a problem with the sim card. Well my husband has an iPhone too and I swapped out the sim cards and my sim card works perfectly on his phone but my phone is still locked. So I called the apple store and made an appointment (I have the 2 year protection plan, my phone hasn't been jailbroken ever and I'm running OS 3.1.3) and they told me to back up my phone before I take it in, but I get an error when I plug to iTunes that it doesn't recognize the device. So what does this sound like? Has this happened to anyone? What should I expect at the apple store? Will all my info be lost?

Sounds like a hardware failure. If the geniuses determine that in fact, that is what has happened, and your phone is under warranty, they will replace it. Unfortunately, you will not be able to backup your phone before you go to the Apple store, if in fact you've suffered a hardware failure. IMEI unknown & ICCID unknown are indicators of a radio failure.

Hi,I have exactly the same problem except i think i have OS 4.1.
What did they say at the Apple Store?
Was it a hardware or software problem?
Some say it could be the processor...
I think my problem is bigger than yours:
I own an iPhone 3Gs since 09/February/2010.
After updating it to the latest OS in iTunes my device broke down.
This was last Sunday and it is unusable since.
After several tries to claim warranty i decided to write here.
Here's why:
This is a factory unlocked device bought in Italy.Never jailbroked.
I live in Hungary where the only iPhone provider are T-Mobile,therefore all iPhones are locked to T-Mobile and they don't want to help me with my issue.
Apple Store does not take care of iPhone warranty here in Hungary because of T-Mobile.
So,basicaly I am stuck here with my broke iPhone, unless i travel back 800-1000km to Italy?
Is it not possible to receive help via e-mail as my device is still under warranty, only if i pay?
That would be ridiculous.

Hi ya,

I've got exact the same problem as "crshrx". I tried to update to the latest iOS through iTunes, now my cell phone shows only: imei unknown, and "Recover needed". It also always say "searching" and Itunes says: no sim inserted, though it actually a legit sim in it.

After more than 10 times recoveries, the problem is still there. I've never jailbroken or sth alike. I have 2 years contract with O2, now is the 13rd month, no guaranty anymore, and no other help how to solve the problem.

Can Apple help in any case here?

Thanks,
MH

Hi, I just bought a completely new iPhone 4 and has exactly the same problem as your picutures show. I have NEVER even used the phone (actually I have never even been able to turn on the phone) and this is the first problem I have met, when I tried to install iPhone through iTunes.
I have called my service provider and they believe that it is more likely to be hardware problem than software.

If the iPhone is faulty but now out of 12 month warranty (13 months from purchase )
Apple Retail Stores will offer an out of warranty replacement for £139
This will be a factory Refurbished unit and will be as new
Doubt you will get any sympathy for the 1 Month out of warranty
Recommend you do not send to O2 they will try to have it repaired not a good idea
