does apple news send notifications before a user ever uses the app?

i noticed that the other day i got a trial activation offer for apple news+. However, I don't use that app, and I don't want any subscription-based apps at this time, so I didn't activate it. However, I received a notification from Apple News today for the first time. Does that mean that somehow, a trial got activated? I didn't see any purchases on my account, but I am wondering if somehow a trial might have gotten activated, and it will bill me later. I think that some apps automatically download, but then they won't do anything unless they are used. There are other apps on my phone that I have not used that I don't think were there on my last phone on earlier iOS versions.

i couldn't find the specific subcategory to tag this in.

iPhone 11

Hello JoshuaCM,

Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities!

Let's check to see if you're signed up for an Apple News+ subscription to get this canceled, if so. Take a look at the following steps for assistance with that: If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support

How to cancel a subscription on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap your name.

3. Tap Subscriptions.

iPhone showing the Subscriptions menu option in Settings.

4. Tap the subscription.

5. Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find the Cancel Subscription button. If there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.

If you're not seeing the subscription listed, you're not signed up for a trial at this point. Are you aware if the notification was suggesting to try Apple News+ for free instead of letting you know this was activated?

Let us know what you find.

Have a great day!
