Q: G5 startup light flashes 3 times then after a pause flashes 3 times etc.

I have a Power Mac G5 1.6 GHz which froze today. I had to shut it down by pressing and holding the startup button. Now when I try to restart it by pushing the startup button the light on the startup button flashes 3 times then after a short pause it flashes 3 times again and this repeats over and over. The chimes don't play and the screen doesn't light up. I tried pushing the Cuda/ PMU but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Mac Mini (2nd Gen), Mac Pro (2 X 2.66 GHz), Mac OS X (10.6.1)

    Hello again,

I also swapped out the RAM and did get it to boot once !!!
But after I shut it down and tried again .. all I got was the three blinking flashes. I have not been able to do anything else yet.

    Thanks again,
    Loretta

Try heating the RAM slots with a Hair Drier for 3-5 minutes & see if it starts.

Worth a try, though Apple says fill the connectors inside out.

Normally they recommend/insist? that you do it this way...

    4-3-2-1*1-2-3-4

With the 1 slots filled first, then the 2 slots filled, etc, but a few have had this work...

    4-3-2-x*x-2-3-4

Skipping the 1 slots & filling the 2 slots then the 3 slots, iirc there was even one that started with the 3 slots then 4 slots.

    Bought RAM at the store...
they had the better deal ... believe it not .....
    plus I got a discount ..

tried with new RAM... booted once..
then on restart same black screen same three flashes ..

brought to store for diagnostic ..

the tech tried the new cards .. same thing happened ..
then he says that my logic board may be no good and that I dont want to buy one ..
the life on a logic board is maybe 6 years ..
better to by a new computer !!???
Apple considers my machine to be "vintage"

    WHAT ??!!
well i was not told that when considering my purchase ...

I am really disturbed by this ..
I planned on having my machine around for a while... after spending $3700. total ... monitor and all .. top of the line ...

Can any one comment on this ?

I am waiting to hear for the diagnostic report ..

Did you try the Solved in this thread...

Strange as it sounds, try heating the area around the RAM slots with a Hair Dryer for 3-5 minutes, see if it boots then.

Apple considers my machine to be "vintage"

Yes, all my Macs are vintage except my dead 2007 iMac.

    Loretta,
I also feel bad about my dying (dead?)G5. I bought it from Apple as a refurbished unit and paid $1399 plus tax for it. Over the years I have purchased quite a few Macs: Two Mac II cis, two beige G3 desktops, a G4 Power mac, one G5 power Mac, Two Mac Minis and a Mac Pro. One Mac II ci and one beige G3 desktop were purchased new all the others were refurbished. The Mac II cis and the beige G3s were still running when I took them to the junk yard. All the others are still working except for the G5. I never had to have any repair work done on any of them. What I'm trying to say is that yes you do expect a computer to work flawlessly for many years but then there are going to be times when they don't. That's going to be true for any make of computer. When your computer dies after 6 years you just have to move on. You said that you paid $3700 for your setup. Since the original price for your G5 was $2500 then you must have purchased a very nice monitor at the same time. That monitor will still work with a new computer. If you're mad at Apple then buy a new Gateway, Dell, HP etc. for about $800. It will out preform your old G5. Check out newegg.com. If you still like Apples then consider the new Mac Mini for about $700. You can still use your old monitor, keyboard and mouse with it. I got a refurbished iMac from Apple to replace my wife's G5 but that's because the G5 had a cheap 17 inch ViewSonic monitor. I might add that several of the Macs that I bought were for my kids - I don't use them up that quickly all by myself.
