Hi, and welcome to the Apple Community
Wondering which MacBook Air model (year) you are using. (Apple menu > "About this Mac" may list that.)
Re: Macbook is slow to respond in general
✽. Sometimes third-party (non-Apple) apps (eg: including unnecessary virus checkers, ad-blockers etc.) can cause issues.
Try turning off any such apps., (even "Chrome", etc can cause issues) or uninstall using the uninstaller from the developer.
✽. Wondering if you have enough memory / storage on your Mac (at least 50 Gb free) for your Operating System to work smoothly.

-Re: Applications are often a blank screen when opened.
Wondering if these are Apple apps, or third-party (non-Apple) apps.

Third-party apps:
32 bit apps will no longer work on Mac since the OS uses 64bit apps since Catalina OS.
(All Apple apps were updated to 64 bit with the upgrade.)
Antidote: If non-Apple apps, check compatibility on app website / upgrade the apps.

Re: -Does my Mac Book have a bug or virus? How can I fix this.
Seems third-party apps and / or lack of enough memory / storage space / are more likely a cause.
If you need more help to fix the issues, feel free to let us know your Mac model (Year) and your findings from the above.
Updating to the latest MacOS if compatible, and space permits, may make a difference.
