Delete Audiobook from iPhone Using iTunes

When my iPhone is connected to iTunes I used to be able to delete an audiobook from the phone by right clicking the book and selecting the delete option (iTunes Version 12.9.5.5). However since upgrading iOS on my phone (my iPhone now runs iOS 15.6.1) the "Delete" option no longer displays when right clicking the book - the options that are presented are to add the book to my phone, to check the audiobook info or to show the book in the iTunes store (please see image below).

I don't know which iOS version was installed on my phone that allowed one to right click a book to delete it.

If I want to delete/remove an audiobook from my phone I can do this directly on the phone (please see image below), but when plugging the phone into iTunes this book still displays under Audiobooks on my phone (despite the fact that I have removed this book directly on my phone). The only way to delete this book from the phone using iTunes is to sync the phone with iTunes. This is rather cumbersome compared to right clicking the book and selecting the delete option.

I have also tried selecting "Song" in the iTunes taskbar and selecting "Delete from Library" but this option is greyed out (see image below).

Is there a way to delete the book on the phone using iTunes without having to sync one's phone with iTunes?

Greetings brian mck,

How did the book get on your iPhone? We ask this to determine if it was synced to begin with. Which version of macOS are we working with? We ask that because starting with macOS Catalina, syncing was moved to Finder and out of iTunes. What happened to iTunes?

If your Mac has available updates/upgrades, please install them after securing a backup. Update macOS on Mac

Thanks.

Good day Anniel2,

How did the book get on your iPhone - I plug my phone into my Mac and wait for it to display under iTunes. I then select the book and click and drag it onto my phone.

Which version of macOS are we working with - macOS Mojave 10.14.6

Upgrade to latest macOS - I tried this a few months back by upgrading to macOS Catalina (someone on this community forum recommended incremental upgrades rather than skipping Catalina, Big Sur etc) and I was not impressed with the manner in which books needed to be added to one's phone (I posted my results into this community forum, but don't know how to view older posts). It also took more than 3 minutes for my phone to show in finder. Catalina was slow and cumbersome in syncing books compared to the iTunes methodology and the upgrade slowed my Mac. So I restored Mojave following guidelines received in this forum. At the end of it all I needed to take my Mac to the local Apple agent to address the slow response from all applications. These people fixed the response time and advised there were multiple issues that needed fixing. So I am very reluctant to upgrade as Mojave works perfectly for my needs.

What I don't understand is that until I upgraded iOS on my iPhone (I cannot remember which version it was), I could right click on a book in iTunes to remove it from my phone. It would appear that this problem surfaced after upgrading to iOS 15.
